Meeting these “gentle giants” was magical. Before planning the shoot, I asked Sean Hensman, the owner of the reserve, to tell me about the social dynamics within the herd of six elephants that live in his immense reserve. He told me in particular about the strong yet good-natured personality of Chova, the oldest male and leader of the herd.

I chose to photograph them at sunset around a large lake, during one of their most enjoyable moments, when they bathe to cool off from the heat of the day and then spray dust all over their bodies. It is difficult to put into words what I felt, other than a deep sense of peace and connection with these beautiful creatures.

An anecdote comes to mind, when the entire herd, having just emerged from the water, passed by at a very close proximity. I recall remaining motionless and continuing to take pictures, as if hypnotised by the grace of their rhythmic, energetic but also calm gait. I was aware that I posed no danger and was definitely on their side.
